SILVER CITY _ Nearly 100 New Mexico children came out to the Aldo Leopold Fishing Derby, held Sat., June 1, at Lake Roberts, in the Gila.
The following groups and organizations helped with the event: Mora National Fish Hatchery, Gila National Forest, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, Friends of the Aldo Leopold Fishing Derby, Trout Unlimited Rio Grande/Gila Chapter, New Mexico Wildlife Federation and Nuestra Tierra.
Ray Trejo, the Southern New Mexico outreach coordinator for the New Mexico Wildlife Federation; Kamilia Elsisie, the communications and education outreach coordinator for NMWF and Gabe Vasquez of Nuestra Tierra, all participated with cleaning up the lake area the day before the event and helping throughout the day.
“All walks of life were there, they came from all over New Mexico,” Trejo said, adding that the kids caught plenty of trout and had a great time. He said Gila trout from the hatchery in Mora were stocked the day before the event.
