ALBUQUERQUE – The National Park Service is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and to highlight the importance of our national public lands – and especially our national parks and preserves – the New Mexico Wildlife Federation is organizing a camping event at the Valles Caldera in coordination with NPS. The Valles Caldera National Preserve is one of New Mexico’s newest national preserves, and it offers 54 miles of hiking trails, 30 miles of trout streams, outstanding opportunities for hunting elk and turkey, trail riding, and more. The New Mexico Wildlife Federation is excited to highlight all that the Valles Caldera has to offer with a weekend of camping, fishing, education, and outdoor activities.
Youth and families are encouraged to register to camp on Friday, August 26 for a night of camping, snacks, and an outdoor showing of Ken Burn’s The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. On Saturday, all are welcome to join us for breakfast, archery, fly-tying, Bio Blitz stations, hiking, and fishing. Lunch will also be provided to attendees on Saturday.
“This event is a great opportunity to highlight the work we’ve accomplished in making the Valles Caldera accessible to hunters and anglers, and give the next generation an opportunity to explore their national public lands,” said Executive Director Garrett Vene Klasen. “By providing a venue for youth and their families to camp, fish, and learn more about their environment, we can engage more New Mexicans in conservation and outdoor activities.”
