ALBUQUERQUE – Today, the Bureau of Land Management finalized its new solar and wind energy leasing rule. The New Mexico Wildlife Federation supports these efforts to expand renewable energy on public lands while also making sure that water, wildlife, and other natural resources are not harmed in the process.
The solar and wind rule will promote development in low-impact areas, and establish a leasing process for more efficient permitting. This rule will take a much needed balanced approach to expanding renewable energy on public lands by facilitating development in the most optimal places. By expanding renewable energy, and moving away from coal, oil, and gas, this rule will help conserve the public lands New Mexicans currently love to hunt and fish on for years to come.
“Striking a balance between expanding renewable energy and protecting our wildlife and water is an essential step forward in becoming more energy independent and ensuring future generations will be able to enjoy our public lands,” said Executive Director Garrett Vene Klasen. “The Solar and Wind Rule put forth by the BLM does exactly that. We look forward to seeing this rule implemented in years to come.”
The New Mexico Wildlife Federation is proud to stand in support of this rule that modernize how wind and solar energy is developed on public lands.
