RiverSource Public lands, Land Ethics Education at Coronado High

Recently, our partners at RiverSource organized a field trip in partnership with several USFS staff from the Coyote Ranger District with the objectives of:
  • Highlighting available jobs in forest management!
  • Discussing some of the land ethics that guide forest management on public lands
  • Figuring out how students get involved in caring for forests and public lands, and the issues right now
The students learned about thinning and prescribed fire in Ponderosa pine woodlands and did hands on work to measure forest health including aging trees and measuring density and age of trees. RiverSource also clarified several misunderstandings of the students (and the general community by extension) about the Forest Planning process. Guides and the students also visited one of the iconic recreation spots on the Coyote District, Tea Kettle Rock, where we talked about recreation issues including concerns about ORV uses in sensitive areas like riparian zones.
