Below is a thank you note from one of the students who joined us on our July 19th rafting trip. We are so excited to be able to give young people opportunities like this and get more New Mexicans outside!
First I would like to thank Andrew for making this uniting event possible for the youth from all over New Mexico to interact with members of Congress such as Senator Martin Heinrich, Congresswoman Michelle Lujan, and Congressman Ben Ray Lujan. This experience makes it possible to personally connect with our representatives, allowing us the students to see how the members are not just locked up in their offices. Personally, I got to ride a raft with Congresswoman Lujan. Ill say that that was quite an experience on its own. Lujan brings an explosion of energy to the rafting group that made us a unique, awesome team!
While passing another raft, we got into a splash fight when Mrs. Lujan began with a friendly splashed aimed at Mr. Lujan, who soon after got his revenge. After rafting down the trip, I got to meet Senator Heinrich, in shorts, a straw hat, and sun glasses! However we had a serious discussion, with him encouraging me to pursue my dream in the field of computer science. Heinrich also encouraged me to investigate an intense course of computer programming he knew about, which made me think that he truly believes in the potential students have to achieve, expecting only the best from them. Adding to the fun the exciting trip was, Senator Heinrich and Congressman Lujan teamed up to get Congresswoman Lujan into the shallow stop of the water that got Congresswoman Lujan drenched!
This insightful trip into the lives of our New Mexico Representatives will be a memorable trip for many. Again, thanks to Andrew and my mentor Mr. Martinez for having students cooperatively working with their Representatives.
